Homework on Implicit bias

All answers must be in your own words. Your answers should be based on at least the Chapman article, and can also include material from the Alspach article.

1. Take two implicit association tests. Attach your results to show that you have taken them. We don't want to know what your results were: please either cut out the parts where it says what your results actually were, or use a marker to cover the results. (2pts)

2. How can doctors' implicit biases affect the health of their patients?
a. Give two examples from the reading of ways in which doctors' biases have been shown to affect patient health (2pts).
b. Give a way that implicit bias could plausibly affect health that has not yet been studied. (2pts)

3. Can a patient's implicit bias affect their medical treatment? Explain and support your answer. (2pts)

4. In your opinion, if a doctor knows that he or she might have an implicit bias, but does not know for sure, what moral obligations does this give him or her? What obligations does this not give him or her? For example, is there a moral obligation to investigate further? To change how s/he treats certain patients? To do more than this? Why? (2pts)
